Identify the actual beneficiary and program

CHAMPVA and TRICARE For Life have different eligibility requirements. A veteran's VA enrollment does not establish that a spouse has the same benefit.

Prepare the person's own coverage documents, effective dates and current plan information. Avoid combining two household members' insurance details in a single review.

Help with preparation without taking over

Ask the person what is working and what they want help understanding. Make a private list of doctors, pharmacies, notices and questions. Keep the beneficiary involved in the decision wherever possible.

Being a family member does not by itself prove authority to make an insurance decision or access records. Ask the responsible program what permission or representative documentation is required.
