What an extra benefit does—and does not—tell you

Medicare Advantage plans may offer benefits beyond Original Medicare, such as certain dental, vision or hearing services. The exact benefit, eligibility conditions and limits depend on the plan.

Ask for the applicable plan documents. Determine whether the feature pays a covered service, provides a reimbursement or allowance, or requires a particular provider or supplier.

Ask service-level questions

For dental care, ask about the actual planned procedure rather than only whether a plan has dental benefits. For vision or hearing, ask which exam, device, supplier or service is covered and which costs remain.

Record the coverage period, frequency limit, provider requirement and any authorization requirement. A brochure headline is a starting point for a question, not proof that a particular service will be paid.

Protect the rest of the coverage picture

An attractive additional benefit should not obscure the medical plan's network, costs or prescription coverage. Review those first with the providers and programs you actually use.

For military-connected households, also examine TFL reimbursement or CHAMPVA pharmacy implications where relevant. A benefit is useful only as part of a workable overall arrangement.

Bring these questions to the review.

• Must I use a network provider or supplier?
• What limits or conditions apply?
• What medical or prescription changes come with this benefit?
