Start with the opportunity to get more from your Medicare arrangement

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer additional dental, vision or hearing benefits; some help pay part or all of the Part B premium. Availability, amounts and conditions vary by plan and area. These are possibilities to compare—not benefits guaranteed to every military retiree.

TRICARE For Life already includes TRICARE pharmacy coverage, so a Medicare Advantage plan without Part D may be relevant to a review. Part D can still be useful for some people. Compare your actual medications and the full arrangement before deciding.

TFL does not simply disappear

TRICARE says that a beneficiary does not lose TFL by signing up for Medicare Advantage. Medicare remains the primary coverage and TFL the second payer for TRICARE-covered services.

That does not mean every provider, service or administrative step stays the same. Confirm the specific plan's rules and the TRICARE rules that apply to the beneficiary.

Ask who will submit the claim

TRICARE's Medicare Advantage guidance warns that claims do not use the usual crossover process and says reimbursement claims will need to be filed for TRICARE-covered services.

Before enrollment, ask the TFL contractor which claim form, itemized bill and explanation of benefits are required. Decide who will gather and submit the documents. Save instructions rather than relying on a general promise that the coverage will work together.

Test the plan against your ordinary care

Medicare Advantage networks and authorization requirements can differ from Original Medicare. Check each physician and facility by exact plan name; a provider saying it accepts Medicare is not the same as confirming participation in a particular plan.

Balance any useful additional benefit against the network, likely cost-sharing and claims process. Include travel and continuing treatment in the review.

Keep the pharmacy decision explicit

TFL beneficiaries already have TRICARE pharmacy coverage. TRICARE notes that Part D may still be worth considering in some circumstances, depending on medications and costs.

Ask for a side-by-side explanation of the current pharmacy arrangement and the proposed one. Do not treat a drug benefit as an automatic improvement merely because it is bundled into a plan.

Bring these questions to the review.

  • What reimbursement documents would I need?
  • Who will submit the TFL claim?
  • Are all current specialists in the plan?
  • Is the pharmacy arrangement appropriate for my medications?
